Autonomy
What it looks like when this need is NOT being met:
- Apathy and disengagement with a task
- Rejection of or seeking ways to “work around” rules and expectations
- A disconnect between the work being produced and the skills and capabilities of the student creating that work
Ways to help meet this need:
- More choices, for example: where to sit, what to eat, read, or wear
- Unstructured time to explore interests
- Opportunities to help make decisions, including classroom rules
- Invitations to share feedback and input into what and how we learn
- Space to work independently
