The Teaching with Improvisation Fellowship is an invigorating, yearlong learning experience for teachers at schools in Washington, DC, grounded in the Inspired Teaching Approach and the 5 Rules of Inspired Teaching Improv that lead to an engagement-rich classroom.
Participants receive a $250 stipend following the completion of all 5 days of the Summer Institute in Washington, DC (June 22-26) and are eligible for an additional $250 at the conclusion of the 2026-2027 school year. Click here for the full outline of Fellowship participation requirements.

2026-2027 Teaching with Improvisation Fellowship Application

Teaching with Improvisation Summer Institute requirements:
- Attend all 5 days of the in-person Institute June 22-26 from 9 AM – 3 PM at the Inspired Teaching Demonstration School (200 Douglas St NE, Washington, DC 20002).
- Complete 2 surveys as part of a study of program impact.
- Allow Inspired Teaching to use photographs and/or video taken during the Institute in publications, news releases, online, and in other communications related to the mission of the organization.
- Develop a “problem of practice” related to a challenge you have seen across learning environments in your school that you would like to help address. Using a planning guide provided by Inspired Teaching, craft a series of steps you will take during the 26-27 school year to address this problem of practice.
School Year 2026-2027 requirements:
- Attend at least 3 of the 1.5-hour monthly Institutes hosted by Inspired Teaching throughout the 2026-2027 school year.
- Address and Illuminate Your Problem of Practice. This will include at least one of the following:
- Co-facilitate a 1.5-hour Institute at your school related to your Problem of Practice (depending on the topic this may be open to teachers from throughout Washington, DC). Inspired Teaching staff will provide co-facilitation, materials, and marketing. You will assist in facilitating 1-2 activities during the session.
- Co-write a “Curiosity Column” for the Hooray for Monday newsletter in which you explain a particular facet of your practice that others can try that meets the ABCDE of Learner Needs.
- Facilitate a learning experience during one of your school’s staff meetings. Inspired Teaching staff can be available to assist, with advanced notice.
- Write a monthly newsletter you distribute to your school community that includes resources and guidance related to your Problem of Practice.
- Provide mentoring and support for at least two teachers in your building who are working on issues related to your Problem of Practice.
- Create and share at least four videos (one per quarter) that model approaches to addressing the topic of your Problem of Practice and share them with your school community. Wherever possible, Inspired Teaching would also like to share these with the wider community via social media, our website, and our online publications.
- Another approach to working on your Problem of Practice that is not listed here but will be clearly communicated to, approved by, and documented for Inspired Teaching staff.
- Complete 2-4 classroom visits with Inspired Teaching staff. These visits are designed to offer support and gather insights from your teaching during the 2026-2027 school year.
- Complete 3 surveys during the school year as part of a study of program impact.
