Directions

The language we use about teaching can have a real influence in how teachers view ourselves and our work. Teaching is often described as “delivering” instruction.

Postal workers deliver mail to mailboxes. But teachers do not deliver information into students; children should be the subjects of our work, not the indirect objects. So let go of the word “deliver.” Change your language to reflect students’ active role in learning and alter your perspective on teaching.
