Autonomy

What it looks like when this need is NOT being met:

  • Apathy and disengagement with a task
  • Rejection of or seeking ways to “work around” rules and expectations
  • A disconnect between the work being produced and the skills and capabilities of the student creating that work

Ways to help meet this need:

  • More choices, for example: where to sit, what to eat, read, or wear
  • Unstructured time to explore interests
  • Opportunities to help make decisions, including classroom rules
  • Invitations to share feedback and input into what and how we learn
  • Space to work independently
