FAQs

Below are a sample of frequently asked questions about the Inspired Teacher Certification Program.

How long will it take for me to become a certified teacher?

The Inspired Teacher Certification Program is a 24-month program. Participants entering the program will begin in July with a three and a half week summer institute that involves coursework and training. In the fall, participants begin teaching under a provisional license at one of our residency partner schools.

After the residency year, Fellows work with Inspired Teaching to secure a full-time teaching placement at traditional or charter DC public schools. Upon successful completion of all program requirements, Center for Inspired Teaching will recommend Fellows for full licensure in the District of Columbia.

What kind of applicant is Inspired Teaching looking for?

Inspired Teaching seeks exceptional individuals from all walks of life with a bachelor’s degree and the personal characteristics that will enable them to advance educational reform in their classrooms. Learn more about who we want.

We are committed to building a teacher workforce that reflects the diversity of DC’s student population; people of color and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

What tests do I need to pass before I begin the program?

All accepted applicants must pass the Praxis Core tests and the Praxis II Content Area Knowledge test related to their certification area. All candidates must take and pass the Praxis Core and Praxis II scores by the end of May, before the program starts. For more information about test requirements, look here.

Do I have to enroll in coursework through Trinity Washington University?

Yes. This coursework is required to meet certification requirements set forth by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education in DC. Inspired Teaching works closely with Trinity to ensure that classes are aligned to program expectations and philosophical underpinnings. All Inspired Teaching Fellows, once admitted, will automatically be enrolled in the M.A.T. program at Trinity, and begin working toward their degree in elementary or early childhood education.

Is my certification reciprocal in school districts beyond Washington, DC?

Most states offer some level of reciprocity for licenses from DC,  but details vary. The policies of the ‘receiving’ state can generally be found on that state’s department of education website.

I’m applying from out of town. How does that affect my personal interview?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer travel support or other accommodations for out-of-town candidates. If selected for a personal interview at one of our selection days, you will be responsible for travel arrangements to and from the location. Inspired Teaching will make every attempt to provide non-local candidates with ample notice to schedule transportation. Attendance at a selection day is required for admission to to the program.

What is my commitment to teaching in DC?

Inspired Teaching expects program alumni to commit to teaching in DC public or DC charter schools for a minimum of two years beyond program completion, ultimately serving the children of DC for a minimum of four years.
