Master of Arts in Teaching

Through a partnership with Trinity Washington University, Fellows earn a Master of Arts in Teaching while enrolled in the Inspired Teacher Certification Program.

All aspects of the Inspired Teaching Residency, including coursework for the Master of Arts in Teaching, are grounded in best practices in teacher education and in the belief that every student possesses the ability to think critically, understand information, and solve complex problems. Through coursework, Inspired Teachers are prepared to be Instigators of Thought – teaching students how to think, not telling them what to think.

All Inspired Teaching Fellows are enrolled in the MAT program at our partner, Trinity Washington University, and develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the science and the art of teaching. Through course activities and assignments, combined with the support of instructors and cohort members, Fellows engage in a rigorous course of study preparing them for a successful career in the classroom. Upon completing the MAT program at Trinity, Inspired Teaching Fellows are prepared to empower learners, families, and communities across a variety of settings, context, and curricula.

Trinity’s MAT program consists of 36 credit hours: 30 coursework credits, 3 residency year teaching credits and 3 Fellows Seminar credits. All courses are offered exclusively for the cohort of Inspired Teaching Fellows, and course sequence and content is developed jointly between the Inspired Teacher Certification Program and Trinity’s School of Education.

All of Trinity’s MAT programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and each program is further approved or recognized by state or other national agencies or organizations.

Early Childhood Education

Early childhood is is commonly referred to as being the period from birth to 8 years of age, and certification in this area spans preschool through 3rd grade. During this time, children experience rapid growth in the social-emotional, behavioral, and cognitive areas. Fellows in the Early Childhood track will learn how to help young children manage emotions and behaviors, develop positive relationships, build vocabulary, and foster an interest in learning. Teachers of young children accept a special responsibility for providing developmentally appropriate learning experiences. The MAT in Early Childhood Education focuses on child development, instructional design and assessment, and relationship-based classroom discipline and management.

Elementary Education

Elementary Education certification encompasses first through sixth grade. Elementary-level teachers are responsible for teaching a wide variety of subjects and content areas to students who are continuing to develop academically, socially and emotionally. Fellows in the Elementary track learn how to support their students growth and development as individuals while providing integrated learning opportunities across all of the content areas.  The MAT in Elementary Education provides a strong knowledge base of best practices in child development, inquiry-based and cooperative learning, differentiated instruction, culturally responsive teaching.

Elementary Inclusive Education

At the end of the residency year, Fellows in the Elementary track may opt into the Inclusive Elementary Education MAT Program, which prepares candidates to teach diverse groups of students in urban schools. The coursework focuses on development of inclusive practices that support access to general education curriculum and contexts for students with and without disabilities. The program leads to a Master’s degree in inclusive education and dual certification in elementary education (1-6) and special education (K-12).
