The Inspired Teaching Institute for STEM Educators – also known as SCALE: Science Curriculum Advancement through Literacy Enhancement – is a customizable teacher training initiative to provide STEM teachers (K-12) with the tools, strategies, and support they need to implement standards-aligned, inquiry-based instruction in their classrooms. The program brings together a community of Teacher Leaders, scientists, and learning experts.
The Inspired Teaching Institute for STEM Educators began as a partnership with DC Public Schools (DCPS). Together, Teacher Leaders and Inspired Teaching have co-authored a series of K-12 science curriculum modules, including many of the DCPS science Cornerstones, which are infused with literacy benchmarks and aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
The program will include DC Public Charter Schools starting school year 2016-17.
The Inspired Teaching Institute for STEM Educators is a yearlong professional development program. The program begins with a Summer Intensive session during which Inspired Teaching Teacher Leaders explore what inquiry-based science and literacy education look like by delving into Inspired Teaching’s inquiry-based, student centered approach.
The Institute then continues through the school year with monthly seminar sessions. Throughout the program, Teacher Leaders analyze 5E Model Science Lessons to identify the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards, connections to literacy, and how to build students’ 4 I’s: Intellect, Inquiry, Imagination, and Integrity.
Building teacher capacity is a critical component of this Inspired Teaching program. By training and supporting Teacher Leaders as they create engaging learning experiences steeped in real world problems, the Inspired Teaching Institute shifts the practice of STEM educators to an approach that prepares students to think and read critically, analyze information, and work both independently and as part of a team.
