SUMMER PROGRAM ASSISTANT

Internship—Full-time


Available Summer 2010 in Washington, DC




Center for Inspired Teaching, a Washington, DC based nonprofit educational organization, is seeking a Summer Program Assistant to support its professional development programs: in particular, the Inspired Teaching Institute and the Inspired Teacher Certification Program.

The Inspired Teaching Institute is an innovative, interactive professional development training program for Washington, DC public school teachers. Through improvisation and other interactive activities, teachers learn strategies for motivating students and engaging them in thoughtful analysis of academic material—ensuring that meaningful learning takes place.

The Inspired Teacher Certification Program is an 15-month accelerated program which prepares and places exceptional individuals, who are passionate about education-reform, in classrooms, in grades PreK-12th, as full-time teachers. This internship is an excellent opportunity to learn how an education non-profit is managed and organized. 



Responsibilities include:



For the Inspired Teaching Institute
  • Managing logistical preparations for the summer session, which includes communication with teacher-participants and managing application materials
  • Providing ongoing logistical support to teacher-participants as needed
  • Serving as the on-site program assistant during the program, which includes:
    • Securing, organizing, and managing supplies – before, during, and after class sessions
    • Set-up and break-down of the program site
    • Anticipating facilitator needs during class sessions
    • Managing facilitator A/V needs during class sessions
    • Organize delivery and order catered lunch for participants and facilitators each day
    • Participating energetically in activities and making positive and thoughtful contributions to the program
    • Photo-documenting activities during the program
    • Transcribing written activities/compiling documented activities into a reference for teacher-participants
    • Creating positive relationships with program participants and serving as an ambassador for the organization
  • Providing general administrative support to the organization as needed
  • Events planning
For the Inspired Teacher Certification Program
  • Assist as needed with the Inspired Teacher Certification Program, which includes:
    • Set up and break down of space
    • Assisting in Inspired summer school classrooms
    • Assisting with projects
    •  Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to juggle and prioritize many tasks and responsibilities at one time
  • A great attention to detail
  • Training in drama and/or improvisation a plus
  • Comfortable in an improvisational setting working with both adults and children  of all ages
  •  Interest in and commitment to education and working with economically disadvantaged youth
  • Intern must be self-motivated, with a strong capacity for independent work
  • Intern should possess the ability to set and meet his/her own deadlines
  • Comfortable acting quickly when presented with unexpected tasks
  • Knowledge of Macintosh operating systems and Microsoft Office suite a plus

Time Period: 40hours/week, June 2010 through August 2010, with possibilities for extension.

Compensation: $250/week. Students on Federal Work Study may be eligible for a higher hourly rate. Please inquire.
